QUTENZA (Capsaicin 8%) – Prescription Treatment for Neuropathic Pain

QUTENZA® (capsaicin) 8% topical system is a prescription topical treatment containing high-concentration capsaicin. It is indicated for the treatment of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) of the feet in adults.

QUTENZA works as a TRPV1 channel agonist. Unlike oral pain medications, it is applied directly to the affected area as a topical system. QUTENZA is designed for administration by a physician or qualified healthcare professional and is not intended for patient self-administration.

QUTENZA Uses

QUTENZA is FDA-indicated for adults with:

• Neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia
• Neuropathic pain associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet The appropriate treatment area and administration procedure should be determined by a healthcare professional.

QUTENZA 8% Topical System

Each QUTENZA topical system contains 8% capsaicin, equivalent to 640 micrograms of capsaicin per square centimeter, with a total of 179 mg of capsaicin per system.

For postherpetic neuralgia, the labeled application time is 60 minutes. For diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet, the labeled application time is 30 minutes. Treatment may be repeated every three months or as warranted by return of pain, but not more frequently than every three months.

Important Safety Information

QUTENZA can cause substantial burning and pain during and after application. Temporary increases in blood pressure can also occur, so blood pressure should be monitored during and after treatment.

Capsaicin can cause severe irritation if it comes into contact with the eyes, mucous membranes, respiratory tract, or unintended areas of skin. QUTENZA should therefore be handled and administered according to the prescribing information by trained healthcare professionals.

Severe application-site burns, including second- and third-degree burns, have been reported. Healthcare professionals should also assess sensory function before each application.

Common adverse reactions include application-site redness, application-site pain, and itching.

Patients should discuss their complete medical history, current medications, allergies, and symptoms with their healthcare professional before treatment.
