MS Contin contains morphine sulfate in an extended-release oral tablet formulation. Morphine is an opioid agonist that produces analgesic effects by acting on opioid receptors in the central nervous system.

Current U.S. labeling lists extended-release tablet strengths of 15 mg, 30 mg, 60 mg, 100 mg, and 200 mg. The 100 mg and 200 mg strengths are intended only for patients who are opioid-tolerant because of the substantially greater risk of life-threatening respiratory depression in patients who are not opioid-tolerant.
